E-mail Print PDF

tree man

If it is not the well respected and trusted Discovery channel, it would be hard to believe there is a man who has some kind of tree root-like warts on his arms, feet, and all over his body.

Who is that Tree Man?
He is a 37 years old Indonesian fisherman, and his name is Dede Koswara. He had a cut on his knee when he was a teenager. From that cut, “tree bark-like warts” began growing out of his arms, feet and his body over the years; local doctors did not have cure for it. He was divorced by his wife, and he has had 2 children to raise alone, now in their late teens. He joined the local freak shows to earn his living and rasie his 2 children.

Basic Concepts of Buddhism

E-mail Print PDF

Buddhism is one of the major religions in the world; actually it is the 4th one behind Christianity, Muslim, and Hinduism as far as the number of the followers. Buddhism originated from India in the fifth century B.C.E., and it is based on the teaching of Siddhartha Gautama, commonly known as Buddha. There are several groups in Buddhism, but some scholars categorize them into two main groups of Buddhists: Mahayana (maha-yean) and Theravada (hin-yean). Another main group “Tibetan Buddhism”, led by Dalai Lama, is considered to be part of Mahayana. Cambodian Buddhists are in Theravada group. Even though these groups have some differences on their belief, they still agree on the basic concepts of Buddhism such as the four noble truths, the Eightfold path, the precepts, etc.

Human cloning? Is it unethical?

E-mail Print PDF

Dolly the Sheep What happens if every body looks exactly the same; men are handsome, and women are beautiful. Imagine when they are all in the same ball room; can they recognize their partner? Would you like to have your children look exactly the same as you? Not just only one, but 10 or even 100 identical children? This could happen IF (big if) we let scientists do their job (clone ourselves). Scientists have proved that they have successfully cloned some animals; yet they have not done it on human beings due to our human high ethic. So what is the cloning? How do scientists clone human being if it is not banned? What are the pros & cons of human cloning?

What is the cloning?

The cloning here is the process of creating an exact copy of gene, cell, or organism. Thus the human cloning is the process of making another human with identical genes (DNA). How do scientists do it? Well first we need to be familiar with some words that are used often in biology.

Do we really originate from a single cell?

E-mail Print PDF

gatrobulationNature is amazing and always has tricks. We know that our body is made up of trillions cells divided into about 200 types. How can a single cell be divided that fast from 1 to trillions, and besides they are divided into various types? That is what scientists say. Is that cell called SUPER CELL? No, so what kind of cell is that?

what is the 1st cell we all are made from?

When a couple have an intercourse, the woman could have her egg (female sex cell) penetrated and fertilized by a sperm (male sex cell) from her partner. The fertilized egg, which is formed from the merging of one egg and one sperm, is called Zygote. That cell is the one we all are made from. Some consider it as a single-cell organism. This cell starts dividing and replicating itself again and again; within a few days it divides to about 100 cells, and it is called “blastocyst” the earlier embryo stage. These cells are known as embryo stem cells, and they will differentiate to different type of cells for different tissues and organs at a stage called “differentiation”.

How Come we have rainbow?

E-mail Print PDF

rainbowWhen we were young kids, we just loved to see rainbow; we did not know where this beautiful rainbow came from. My parents did not explain it to me, but I did learn it through high school like every body did. So I just want to refresh our memories about it.

Where can we see rainbow?

The rainbow is seen when there are water drops in the air, and the sun is behind us. Thus it is seen so often when there is a rainfall. It is also seen in the mist of water fall, fountain, and water sprinkler. We also can create rainbow, and I did it with my kids when they were young by spraying the water into the air in the sunny day.

How does the rainbow work?

Actually the rainbow is just the natural phenomena, and Isaac Newton was the 1st one to understand it after he did experiment by putting light through a prism. When the light went through the glass prism, it bent; when it came out, it bent again. He also discovered that the light coming out of the prism had different colors from red to violet. See the below picture.
