Can we be proud of Cambodia

E-mail Print PDF

I keep asking myself so often lately if I am really proud of Cambodia and why. And all the time I come up with a very short list of why and a longer list of why I am not. Here are the lists:
I am proud of Cambodia because:

  • Our Ancestor built the magnificent Angkor Watt, which is recognized around the world as the wonderful monument. This Angkor means that our Ankorian ancestors were architects, artists, and engineers. And we have their DNA.
  • We are now considered to be a democratic country even though it goes slow to the western standard. But what do we expect from our young democracy in a country that most of the intellectuals were killed during the Khmer Rouge period. At least we are better than Vietnam, Lao, and Burma. For sure the frame work and the foundation of the democracy are there to prosper.

Can we apply Buddhism to our daily life

E-mail Print PDF

BuddhaThe other day I wrote an essay about what is Buddhism, and later a couple readers have asked me to write more about it. I decide to write this one.  The purpose of this essay is about how to apply Buddha’s teaching to our daily life.

We all know that all religions always teach their followers to do good things in life such as five, eight, and ten precepts in Buddhism, Ten Commandments in Christianity, 10 disciplines in Hinduism, etc. Thus there is no bad religion after all.  The religion is seen either bad or good depending on people judgment and practice, and we always have different opinions.  But that is not what we are interested to talk about; we are interested on how to apply Buddha’s teaching to our daily life. We are not going to talk any thing more than that (not related to the next life).

Yes, there is nothing perfect in this world. So do religions. They do have bad and good parts. So what are the good parts of Buddhism that we can apply to our daily life?

Yes, Buddhism has a lot of good parts. The following doctrines are the ones I like most and apply to my daily life:

  • Nothing is permanent
  • Life is suffering
  • Middle path
  • Four Noble Truth (Craving and attachment)
  • Eight Fold Paths
  • Anger Management

Buddhism?

E-mail Print PDF

BuddhaBuddhism is one of the major religions in the world; actually it is the 4th one behind Christianity, Muslim, and Hinduism as far as the number of the membership. Buddhism originated from India in the fifth century B.C.E., and it is based on the teaching of Siddhartha Gautama, commonly known as Buddha. Buddhism is a unique religion that does not force people to believe on things blindly. Buddha asks people to use the rational thinking to believe on things. There are several groups in Buddhism, but I like to categorize them into two main groups of Buddhists: Mahayana and Theravada. Another main group “Tibetan Buddhism”, led by Dalai Lama, is considered to be part of Mahayana. Cambodian Buddhists are in Theravada group. Even though these groups have some differences on their belief, they still agree on the basic fundamentals of Buddhism, which are the four noble truths and the Eightfold path.

Can you believe in Tree Man?

E-mail Print PDF

tree manIf it is not the well respected and trusted Discovery channel’s program show, it would be hard to believe there is a man who has some kind of tree root-bark-like warts on his arms, feet, and all over his body.  The fact there is a man like that.

Who is Tree Man?
He is an Indonesian fisher man who is now 36 years old, and his name is Dede Koswara. He had a cut on his knee when he was a teenager. From that cut, “tree root-bark-like warts” began growing out of his arms, feet and spread all over his body over the years; local doctors did not have cure for it. He was divorced by his wife, and he has had to 2 children to raise alone, now in their late teens. He joined the local freak show to get paid to support himself and his 2 children.

Do we really originate from a single cell?

E-mail Print PDF

gatrobulationNature is amazing and always has tricks. We know that our body is made up of trillions cells divided into about 200 types. How can a single cell be divided that fast from 1 to trillions, and besides they are divided into various types? That is what scientists say. Is that cell called SUPER CELL? No, so what kind of cell is that?

what is the 1st cell we all are made from?

When a couple have an intercourse, the woman could have her egg (female sex cell) penetrated and fertilized by a sperm (male sex cell) from her partner. The fertilized egg, which is formed from the merging of one egg and one sperm, is called Zygote. That cell is the one we all are made from. Some consider it as a single-cell organism. This cell starts dividing and replicating itself again and again; within a few days it divides to about 100 cells, and it is called “blastocyst” the earlier embryo stage. These cells are known as embryo stem cells, and they will differentiate to different type of cells for different tissues and organs at a stage called “differentiation”.
